About Guess the Date

The Game

Guess the Date is a free daily puzzle game that challenges your knowledge of historical dates. Each day, you're presented with a famous historical event and must guess the exact month, day, and year it occurred. You get 6 guesses, with higher/lower feedback on each component to guide you toward the answer.

A new puzzle is released every day at midnight UTC, and the same puzzle is presented to every player worldwide — just like Wordle. You can share your results with friends using the emoji grid, without spoiling the answer.

How It Works

1

Read the description of a historical event. The description sets the scene without giving away the date.

2

Enter your guess — a month (1-12), day (1-31), and year. For ancient events before the Common Era, toggle the BC button.

3

After each guess, each component lights up: green if correct, amber with an arrow showing whether the correct answer is higher or lower.

4

Use the feedback to narrow down the date. You have 6 guesses total. The answer is revealed after your last guess or when you get it exactly right.

The Archive

Missed a day? Every past puzzle is available in the Puzzle Archive. Archive puzzles are fully playable with the same 6-guess format. Archive results don't affect your daily stats or streak, so you can practice without pressure.

Fair Play

The correct date is never sent to your browser until the game is over. Each guess is validated on our server, and a signed session token prevents tampering with guess counts. Everyone gets the same puzzle, the same number of guesses, and the same experience.

Historical Accuracy

We strive for accuracy, but history is messy. Some dates reflect scholarly consensus rather than absolute certainty, particularly for ancient events. Where debate exists, we've chosen the most commonly cited date. If you spot an error, we'd love to hear about it.
